Hiring Managers - Check Your Bias

Bias in hiring doesn’t always look obvious. Sometimes, it sounds like empathy.
Imagine this: A candidate casually mentions they just had a baby. You remember how hard those first few months were, how sleep-deprived you were, how hard it was to stay focused at work. Without realizing it, you start to question whether this candidate can fully commit to the role. That’s bias.
⚠️ Here’s the truth: Life experiences like becoming a new parent do not define someone’s professional capabilities or potential. When we allow personal memories or assumptions to influence hiring decisions, we risk missing out on talented individuals who can thrive, even if their path looks different than ours.
Awareness is key. We must continuously examine our thoughts and gut reactions during interviews. Ask yourself:
Am I making a decision based on facts or feelings?
Is this assumption fair or just familiar?
Let’s commit to hiring the right candidate, not just the one that makes us feel comfortable.
